9.10 am: The Future of Associations: Professor Mark Lyons

Mark LyonsIn this short presentation Professor Lyons will argue the leaders of business and professional associations must orientate their members towards emerging trends and issues, so that both members individually and their associations are able to take advantage of emerging developments. Associations are an important element in civil society and should try to model civil society in their internal workings. The presentation will explore three trends that appear to be strong and will have significant implications for our world and therefore important for associations and their members.

After the presentation each table will be hosted by a Chief Executive Officer or Senior Executive from the Third Sector who will encourage discussion and debate to allow full input by participants to ensure we can capture ideas on how to address the key issues facing us.

The Impact on our Community: Associate Professor Janette Lindesay

Janette Lindesay is internationally recognised as one of the leading scientist involved in the field of climatology. Her presentation will be a frank but factual understanding of the issues of climate change. It is clear time is running out to take action. Association Executives are faced with the responsibility to lead their organisations not only to influence the rest of the community but lead by example.

11.30 am: The Rudd Government and the Third Sector -

The Hon Lindsay Tanner MP Federal Minister For Finance and Deregulation
Lindsay TannerLindsay Tanner has lived in the Melbourne Electorate and been a member of the Australian Labor Party for over 30 years. He is committed to social justice and has held a number of Shadow portfolios in his time as Federal Member of Parliament for Melbourne and is currently the Minister for Finance and Deregulation in the Rudd Government. Lindsay will cover a number of present and future initiatives which will influence the Third Sector.

The Minister has expressed a keen interest in gaining feedback from delegates and has committed a period of time to be with us to debate, listen to ideas, issues and solutions he can communicate to the leadership of the Labor party. This session will encourage consensus responses to Federal initiatives but also encourage innovative thoughts and ideas. The Minister has requested to continue with discussion over lunch.

1.30 pm: Building Better Partnerships between the Third Sector and the Commonwealth Government: Introduction of the National Compact

Marilyn Webster: Board Director- Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS)

It is important that the Not-for-Profit Sector is well supported and able to work in partnership with the Commonwealth Government to build social inclusion and improve the lives of Australians. Crucial to this is the development and maintenance of strong and positive relationships between the Sector and the Commonwealth Government. It has been proposed that this could be done through the development of a National Compact.
